To extend battery life on most modern Hand Held Radios take the battery off the H.T. when not using the radio.
The microprocessor in most H.T.'s use a very small amount of power when the unit is turned off.
This small current drain will kill the battery in time.
Some will drain the battery to the point it will not charge.

DO NOT LEAVE THE BATTERIES ON CHARGE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME take the battery off charge when charged and only charge them when necessary as all batteries have limited number of charge discharge cycles.

My H.T.'s have Li-ion batteries.
The batteries will stay charged for over a year if not on the radio, but only 2 - 3 months if on the H.T..
